Spanish mackerel

Scomberomorus commerson

Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) — illustration

Illustration: Bloom by Day

Long, narrow and steel-blue over silver, crossed by faint wavy bars that fade as it grows, built like something thrown rather than swum. It comes through fast and high in the water, usually alone, and is past you before the shape resolves.

Description written for Bloom. RECORDS ARE WHERE SOMEONE LOOKED, NOT WHERE THE FISH ARE. A record count is a count of records near here and nothing else -- it is not abundance, and a species with few records is not rare. Absence of records is not absence of fish.
