Roundface batfish
Platax teira
Illustration: Bloom by Day
A tall silver disc of a fish with a dark bar through the eye, another over the pectoral and a black smudge beneath it. Adults drift around bommies and wrecks in small groups and are curious enough to follow a diver about.
how to recognise it
- a characteristic dark blotch BELOW the pectoral fin
- a dark vertical bar through the eye, and a second bar through the pectoral fin
- yellow to blackish pelvic fins
- a large rounded silvery to greyish-brown body; adults have a low hump on the nape
don’t confuse with
- Diamondfish — the diamondfish is a smaller silver diamond with black-edged dorsal and anal fins and no bar through the eye

Description written for Bloom. RECORDS ARE WHERE SOMEONE LOOKED, NOT WHERE THE FISH ARE. A record count is a count of records near here and nothing else -- it is not abundance, and a species with few records is not rare. Absence of records is not absence of fish.
