Grey nurse shark

Carcharias taurus

Grey nurse shark (Carcharias taurus) — illustration

Illustration: Bloom by Day

PROTECTED — look, don't shoot

Bronze-grey over a pale belly with scattered rust-coloured spots, a stout body and a mouthful of needle teeth that stay visible even when the jaw is shut. It hangs almost motionless in gutters and under overhangs in loose groups, and for all the teeth it is slow, placid and uninterested in divers.

Description written for Bloom. RECORDS ARE WHERE SOMEONE LOOKED, NOT WHERE THE FISH ARE. A record count is a count of records near here and nothing else -- it is not abundance, and a species with few records is not rare. Absence of records is not absence of fish.
