Great hammerhead

Sphyrna mokarran

Great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) — illustration

Illustration: Bloom by Day

PROTECTED — look, don't shoot

The biggest hammerhead, pale grey and bronzy, its head almost straight across the front and its first dorsal very tall and pointed — a sail rather than a fin. Usually alone, usually deep, and usually gone before you have decided which hammerhead it was.

Description written for Bloom. RECORDS ARE WHERE SOMEONE LOOKED, NOT WHERE THE FISH ARE. A record count is a count of records near here and nothing else -- it is not abundance, and a species with few records is not rare. Absence of records is not absence of fish.
