Dusky flathead

Platycephalus fuscus

Dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus) — illustration

Illustration: Bloom by Day

A long flat wedge of a fish that lies buried in sand with only its eyes and the outline of its back showing. You will usually miss it entirely until it bolts, and the puff of sand it leaves is often all you see.

Description written for Bloom. RECORDS ARE WHERE SOMEONE LOOKED, NOT WHERE THE FISH ARE. A record count is a count of records near here and nothing else -- it is not abundance, and a species with few records is not rare. Absence of records is not absence of fish.
