Balmain bug

Ibacus peronii

Balmain bug (Ibacus peronii) — illustration

Illustration: Bloom by Day

A flat reddish-brown shield of a crustacean with short wide antennae instead of pincers, and eyes set near the middle of the shell. It digs into sand and mud with those antennae and is usually seen as a pair of eyes and an outline rather than an animal.

Description written for Bloom. RECORDS ARE WHERE SOMEONE LOOKED, NOT WHERE THE FISH ARE. A record count is a count of records near here and nothing else -- it is not abundance, and a species with few records is not rare. Absence of records is not absence of fish.
